What is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary healing therapy, popularized by Mikao Usui in Japan, in the early part of the 20th century. Reiki, pronounced ‘ray-key’, is a simple, safe and effective system of healing which activates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself.
The name Reiki originates from the Japanese words ‘rei’ meaning ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ meaning ‘energy’. This universal energy is channeled through the practitioner to the recipient and works on all levels of the mind, body, emotion, and spirit, allowing for harmony and balance to be restored. Reiki also promotes self-development in all aspects of life.
Reiki treatments reduce stress within the body inducing a state of relaxation. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing. Treatments produce a feeling of total wellbeing and this has a positive effect on the immune system.
What can you expect during a Reiki treatment?
A session is usually 60 minutes long. A discussion will take place at the beginning of a session providing the client an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing as well as to share what they are hoping to achieve from their session. During the session, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back and/or stomach with their shoes removed. Unlike massage therapy, sessions are completed with the client fully clothed. A session can either be hands-on, where a light touch is applied during the session or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this to the practitioner before they begin.
The session will then proceed with the Reiki Practitioner moving through various Reiki hand positions. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session, particular images or colors, or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.
Usually, a session is done without talking with soft ambient music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation. If you want to communicate something during the session, such as if you are cold or too warm, if you would like them to adjust the music, if you are feeling a sensation you would like to discuss, if something feels uncomfortable for you, if you have a question or issue, then do speak up at any time during the session. Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. Also, your practitioner may ask you after the session if there is anything you would like to share and you may do so at your option. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
The main purpose of a Reiki treatment is not only to support the physical body, but also to promote a positive mind so you can experience more joy in life. The great thing about Reiki is that one does not have to be ill to experience the benefits. Reiki is a great tool for stress reduction and relaxation. Many people use Reiki for physical wellness as well. Reiki is a great tool to use as a complement to traditional medicine and is practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings. After a treatment, most people feel calm and relaxed and some say they feel energetic, clear-minded and productive.
What to do following a session?
It is important to drink plenty of water following a Reiki session to hydrate your body. Since your body’s energy system may be moving at a more optimum rate, drinking water and eating healthy food will aid in the process. It is beneficial to spend some quiet time that day or evening after your session as well. You can choose to journal following a session as you may have some insights and clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki session.
What are the Reiki precepts?
The basis of Mikao Usui’s teachings begin with the Precepts, referred to in Japan as The Gokai. Precepts are a moral instruction which have been used for centuries by Buddhists and serve as a daily guideline of how to live. They are an integral and important part of the whole system.
